HALTERM Limited operates Canada's largest Atlantic coast container terminal on a 70-acre site in the Port of Halifax, Nova Scotia.

In 1969, HALTERM opened the first container terminal in Halifax, one of the first on North America's East Coast. Built at a cost of $15 million, HALTERM was an investment in the door-to-door movement of general cargo. Over the years, Halterm developed into one of the first common-user facilities in North America. Halterm has since become a cornerstone of the Port of Halifax.

More About Us...

Our Location

HALTERM's location, just one hour off the Great Circle Route, makes it the closest east coast container terminal to Europe.

Situated at the mouth of Halifax Harbour, HALTERM offers its users two important benefits - deep water port facilities and unobstructed access from the ocean.

Your approach is clear. No bridges, ice, shallows, cross-currents, narrow channels or significant tides.

Our Facility

Two post-Panamax cranes, four ship gantry cranes and three deep-water berths (1000 meters in length) comprise the heart of HALTERM's vessel handling system. These facilities permit us to simultaneously handle three fourth-generation vessels with containers stacked up to six high on deck. Two ro/ro ramps provide the flexibility to handle breakbulk cargo and rolling stock.

With 70 uncongested acres of terminal space, HALTERM can accommodate up to 12,500 TEU's, including 192 electric temperature controlled units.

Facilities include an onsite consolidation shed, maintenance shop and a full complement of terminal equipment.
